Microneedling FAQ
A topical numbing cream is typically applied before the procedure to minimize discomfort. Most clients experience mild to moderate discomfort, often described as a feeling of light scratching or tingling.
The number of treatments needed varies depending on the individual's skin condition and goals. Generally, a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is recommended for optimal results.
Immediately after the procedure, the skin may appear red and feel slightly swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually resolves within 24-48 hours. Some people may experience minor peeling or dryness in the days following treatment.
Side effects are typically mild and may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, and peeling. Serious complications are rare but can include infection or scarring if post-care instructions are not followed properly.
Microneedling is suitable for most skin types and tones. However, individuals with active skin infections, open wounds, keloid scars, or certain medical conditions may not be eligible for treatment.
Yes, microneedling is often combined with topical serums like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, peel, dermaplaning, or other cosmetic procedures to enhance results. Our Estheticians can recommend the best combination based on your skin concerns/goals.
Results can vary, but many clients notice improvements in skin texture and appearance within a few weeks after the first treatment. Maintenance treatments every 6-12 months can help prolong the benefits.
Microneedling is generally safe for all skin tones when performed by a trained professional using appropriate techniques and equipment. However, it's important to consult with a qualified provider to discuss any potential risks or concerns specific to your skin type.
Compared to many other aesthetic treatments, it’s relatively simple to prepare for a microneedle appointment. Unlike laser and light treatments, there is no need to prepare your skin for this treatment weeks in advance. Most of the guidelines for this treatment should be followed for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours before your appointment, depending on the condition of your skin. Speaking of your skin condition, the very first thing you need to know about preparing for this treatment is the ideal health of your skin. You can’t have this treatment if you have an active skin infection or breakout, which includes cold sores, fever blisters, hives, allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, or active acne. Please reschedule your treatment if your skin is not clear on the day of your appointment.
Preparation Guidelines
There are two important components to prepare your skin for this treatment. The first is to avoid any direct exposure to sunlight for at least 24 hours unless you are wearing strong SPF to protect your skin. Prolonged sun exposure, including exposure to tanning beds, may cause skin irritation during your treatment. You will also need to temporarily stop using certain skincare products, particularly retinoids and acid-based products, such as azelaic acid, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid. While these products can benefit the health and appearance of your skin, they should not be used immediately before or after a microneedle treatment to avoid any possible skin irritation or overdrying, we suggest 7 days without any use of these and 7 days after. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, then you may need to temporarily stop using the medication for one to three days before your appointment.
On Appointment Day
There are also steps you can take for your comfort during the treatment. For patients with sensitive skin, it’s sometimes a good idea to take Tylenol about one hour before your appointment to minimize any possible discomfort from the treatment process. We will apply a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort.

After the treatment is complete, you should know the best products to use after microneedling to maintain your results. Here are some professional tips to follow:
- Defend your newly treated skin. For the first 24 hours after treatment, stay away from makeup and make sure you wear sunscreen, as your face will be especially vulnerable to damage and irritation from sun exposure while it’s healing.
- Apply our home care mask provided 12 hours after treatment to continue to soothe the skin.
- Keep your skin moisturized. Microneedling can leave your face feeling dried out. Find a hydrating moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, our fav is our Tuel Hydrate serum to keep your skin feeling smooth and balanced. Our fav brand is Defenage, their Platinum line. It is a medical skin care line, clinically studied, evidence based! The DefenAge 24/7 Barrier Balance Cream will not only hydrate your face, but will also assist the healing process (apply 24 hours after your microneedling procedure).
- Cleanse your face AM/PM, 12 hours after your treatment, it’s safe to wash your face with clean hands, cool water with a gentle cleanser like our Prebiotic Cleanser or Stop Being Sensitive Milk Cleanser. Your skin will be sensitive, so wait to use a cleansing brush for at least a week so as to avoid further irritation.
- Use collagen-stimulating peptides. While microneedling triggers collagen production, using collagen-stimulating peptides will compound the effects and help your skin regenerate. The DefenAge 8:1 BioSerum contains palmitoyl tripeptide-38, which is excellent for post-microneedling use and encourages your skin to heal and to produce new cells. Apply 8-in-1 BioSerum 24-48 hours after your microneedling procedure to promote healing and maximize the cosmetic benefits.
- Cease Vitamin A products and glycolic acids for 1 week before and after. When you do start using vitamin A again, you can try starting with a lower concentration and paying attention to how your skin reacts.
- 24 hours- avoid saunas, Jacuzzis, placing face in direct hot water or heat or sweating. Do not put anything on the skin except recommended home care.
- Be aware of touching face with unwashed hands, if pets live in the home be careful with them licking or scratching your face.
