Should You Shave Between Waxing Appointments? Here's Why We Say No

Here's a question we hear at Bumblebee all the time: “Should I shave between waxing appointments?”

Our answer? Nope! Put that razor down. We promise there's a reason. Whether you're new to Brazilian waxing or you've been coming to our Tallahassee studio for years, understanding what happens between visits can help you get the most out of your wax.

Waxing and shaving do two different things

Waxing removes hair from the root. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface of your skin. After a wax, hair gradually starts growing back, and not every hair grows at exactly the same pace.

If you shave between appointments, you cut some of that regrowth short. When it's time for your next wax, some hairs may be long enough for the wax to grip while others are still too short. That can mean less even hair removal and patches that feel prickly sooner than you'd like.

Why does hair length matter?

Wax needs enough length to grip the hair. As a general guide, roughly a quarter inch of growth is often helpful, although timing varies from person to person and by the area you're waxing.

When hair is too short, trying to remove it may require extra passes or leave some hairs behind. Rather than guessing or shaving to “tidy things up,” follow the growth window your esthetician recommends for your particular service.

Does shaving make hair grow back thicker?

No. Shaving doesn't change the thickness, number, or growth rate of hair follicles. It can simply make cut hair feel blunt as it grows out. Our concern is keeping enough consistent regrowth for your next waxing appointment, not that shaving permanently changes your hair.

Should you trim before your appointment?

Usually, please leave the trimming to us. It's easy to take off too much, which can leave hair too short to wax effectively. If any trimming would help, we'll take care of it during your visit.

When should you schedule your next wax?

Many guests find that a regular schedule of around four weeks works well, but timing depends on individual hair growth, the area being waxed, and your treatment history. Ask your esthetician what makes sense for you instead of relying on one rule for everyone.

If you're getting ready for your first Brazilian or returning after a longer break, tell us when you book. We'll help you choose the right appointment length.

The Bumblebee bottom line

For smoother, more consistent waxing results, skip shaving between appointments, don't trim too short, and keep your regular waxing schedule. And never feel embarrassed about asking a question. We've heard it before, and we're here to help.
